Long-standing members of PITCOM will be saddened to learn of the death of John McWilliam. The former Member for Blaydon was Chairman from 1997 until his retirement from Parliament in 2005.

Andrew Miller MP, PITCOM's Chairman, said:

John was one of the founders of Pitcom and was chairman for all the time I was in Parliament with him. John was always convivial company, well known in the Strangers and Annies, but behind the scenes he did a lot to help a better understanding of telecommunications and IT at a time when few MPs could have switched on a computer. He could wax lyrical about the older technologies back to the days of Strowger Crossbar and other old GPO kit, but he also understood the advances that are profoundly changing our lives today.

Pitcom has a lot to thank John for and our condolences go to his family.

Ian Taylor MP and Bill Olner MP have also paid tribute to John for his past role as Chairman of the Parliamentary Space Committee. He will be remembered with great affection by friends across the political parties.
